Cyber safety - a definition

Cybersafety is the safe and responsible use of information and communication technologies: things like the internet, computers, gaming devices and mobile phones – anything which can access the online environment we call Cyberspace.

Cyber bullying in the classroom

Introduction: Cyber bullying is defined as "The use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others." [Bill Belsey, www.cyberbullying.ca]

Suggestion: Read the following Interface article and leave a comment in Interface Magazine online.

What is the role of the classroom teacher in relation to cyber bullying? What is the role of the school to keep our students safe?

Reflection: We'd love to hear your view. As well as leaving comment in Interface, you can leave a message in the DISCUSSION tab above.

Policies and guidelines

Introduction:
All schools will need to align their cyber safety policies with their long-term strategic planning. Considerations will need to be made in relation to how to mentor our students to be savvy, ethical digital citizens, how to keep our students safe online, how to provide a safe electronic environment (infrastructure) for our students to work in and how to educate our parents. For more guidance on how to develop a robust cybersafety programme, go to the Netsafe links @ http://www.cybersafety.org.nz/kit/

Suggestion: If you have any documentation, policies, agreements to share, please feel free to upload these here. Likewise, you can join this wiki and add your resources to Digital citizenship resources for schools.

Internet censorship

Introduction: Many schools use internet blockers. They block the dangerous and inappropriate sites that should be blocked, but they also block sites that really don't need to be blocked and have real educational value - like Youtube, wikispaces, blogs etc. Sometimes you can type a word like 'shag' hoping to find a relevant website on birds, only to find these sites are blocked as well.

Suggestion: Blocking web sites at school

How far should we go? Do you think that schools should block websites like the ones mentioned above or manage this in some way?

Reflection: Should we lock our systems down or find another way to manage them like using tools like Hector's World Safety Button? What do you think? Please add your comments below.
